Empowering Financial Literacy: Student Insights from SJS Shadow Program
At SJS Investment Services, we believe financial literacy is one of the most powerful tools you can develop early in life. When individuals build strong financial habits at a young age, they gain more than just knowledge - they can develop discipline, confidence, and long-term resilience.
As part of that commitment, we were proud to host four students from St. John’s Jesuit High School for their Senior Project one-week shadow program. Throughout the week, students had the opportunity to experience wealth management firsthand - gaining exposure to financial advising, investment strategy, operations, and the collaborative culture that drives our team.
But more importantly, they brought curiosity, thoughtful questions, and fresh perspectives. Here’s what the students had to say about their experience.
Student Reflections:
“This week, we learned an incredible amount about wealth management and financial advising through SJS Investment Services. Prior to this experience, our understanding of investing was fairly limited. Through sessions focused on foundational theory, we built a strong base that made it easier to transition into the practical side later in the week.
We also gained a clear understanding of SJS’ values - especially the commitment to always act in the best interest of the client. Learning about portfolio diversification and investment strategy helped us better understand how to approach managing finances early in life.
Additionally, we had the opportunity to explore different departments, including HR, operations, and financial advising. This experience not only expanded our knowledge of personal finance, but also sparked a deeper interest in pursuing a career in the field. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity.”

“This past week has been a significant learning experience. One of the first things that stood out was the character of the team. It was clear that the well-being of clients is the top priority, which challenged my initial perception of the industry.
Throughout the week, the four of us also learned a great deal about the technical side of the business. From the methodology used in managing portfolios to the strategic outlines for investing client funds, we saw a lot.
One thing is clear: they view each client as an individual, and strive to do what is best for every specific situation. The world of wealth management is broad and detailed, but by trusting the data and historical trends, SJS has created a successful business model as an RIA.”
– Anderson Kraus
“My week at SJS was an eye-opening experience. At the start of the project, I only had very surface level knowledge about the investing world through my business and finance class at St. John’s Jesuit.
I not only learned about finances and financial advising, but also learned a lot of vital lessons about life. One of the biggest lessons I learned was ‘invest early and often.’ That idea stuck with me - not just for finances, but for life. If you want results, you have to be consistent and committed from the start.
Through many meetings, lessons, and experiences, I have gained valuable knowledge through my time at SJS.”
– Gavin Jones
“During my week at SJS, I learned a great deal about how the firm operates and how deeply they care about their clients. It’s clear that their priority is always doing what’s best for the client.
The team creates a welcoming environment and focuses on building personal relationships, which stood out to me right away.
I initially walked through the doors thinking I had a solid grasp of investments, but I quickly realized how much I had left to learn. There are many different strategies and approaches, and it’s not like the fast-paced day trading you often see portrayed in the movies. They want people to save up for their retirement, have a commitment for long-term growth, and ensure that clients can look toward the future with confidence.”
– Jason Loveday
